The Magnitude of the Roman Forum

Most people know that when you visit Rome, you are visiting a city that is steeped in history

. As if to prove that fact, there are still the remains of many ancient structures dotted in various places around Rome.

One of the most significant locations of all has to be the Roman Forum. You may have seen photos of parts of the Forum online or in books, but nothing can prepare you for the reality of it, let alone the size.

It is certainly hard to believe that the area used to be nothing more than marshland many centuries ago. We have the ancient Romans to thank for turning it into the amazing site and indeed sight that it is today. Even though it largely lies in ruins now, it still manages to command a great deal of respect and attention. Indeed it is one of the most popular areas of Rome for tourists to head to when they visit the city.

The Roman Forum was the main place in Rome where everyone congregated. The Senate began life here, and even Julius Caesar himself walked among the streets and buildings. Keep that in mind as you explore everything the Roman Forum has to show you.

As you may now realise, the Forum does not consist of a single building. Rather, it has lots of different structures which make up the whole. There are temples, arches and basilicas, some of which are in a better state of preservation than others.

For instance the Arch of Septimius Severus is still in extremely good condition. You can walk underneath it as you explore the rest of the Forum. It has been through the wars a bit over the years, particularly when the earliest forms of traffic were allowed to pass through it, but thankfully this is no longer allowed.

Elsewhere in the Forum you will find the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina. While the names are perhaps not as familiar as the Temple of Castor and Pollux, there is no doubt that the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina is in superb condition. Virtually the whole structure remains intact here, which is quite something considering how many centuries it has been standing for.

You can easily spend several hours exploring all that the Roman Forum has to show you. There are many lessons here to learn about what ancient Romans did and how they spent their days. Just imagine what it would have looked like at the height of its use.

When you have booked your Rome flights and you are ready to travel to Rome itself, make sure you set a day aside to experience the majesty and the grandeur of the Roman Forum. There is really nothing else like it on earth.
