The Bukit, as it is commonly referred to, is not known only for its unique position, but the Bukit is also renowned for its famous cliff-hanging temple at Uluwatu Bali, the Pura Uluwatu (or Uluwatu Temple), with its majestic cliff setting and breathtaking view of the sunset and the Indian Ocean.

One of Bali's 6 biggest temple (the Sad Khayangan), Pura Uluwatu is also well-known for its magnificent view of the Indian Ocean and spectacular sunset backdrop as well as its very scenic cave underneath with rock formations leading onto a beach close to the temple, which is a popular spot for surfers.
Even more remarkable than the temple itself, is Uluwatu Temple's location which is perched high on the steep cliff top at the edge of a plateau 250 feet above the roaring waves of the Indian Ocean. This Balinese Hindu Sea Temple at Uluwatu was built in the 11th century by a Javanese sage, Empu Kuturan and is dedicated to the spirits of the sea. The padmasana shrines is said to be constructed by the order of another sage from East Java, Dang Hyang Nirartha, who is claimed to have attained Moksha there.
Sitting atop the cliffs overlooking the famous surf break at Uluwatu, Pura Luhur Uluwatu is considered as an architectural wonder in black coral rock, beautifully designed with spectacular ocean and sunset views.
