The Many Benefits Of Massage Aromatherapy
Plants and their parts are used in ancient civilizations to heal
, energize, and help the body relax. This ancient science of healing is still practiced today and is widely known as aromatherapy. As with herbal medicine, parts of plants such as barks, seeds, flowers, leaves and roots are used to extract essential oils that are used in aromatherapy massages.
What is aromatherapy massage?
Aromatherapy massage uses essential oils to alleviate pain and help the mind and body relax. A massage therapist usually uses a mixture of oils to calm the nerves such as lavender and bergamot and peppermint and eucalyptus to ease sore muscles and joints. Unlike fragrance and perfume oils that are mostly derived from chemicals, these essential oils are highly volatile and are extracted from plants and their flowers, leaves and barks. They are also used in aromatherapy baths, body treatments and facials.
The essential oils used in aromatherapy massages have different effects and healing properties. They can affect your heart rate, blood pressure, stress level, memory, breathing, digestion, and your immune system. Some of these oils can energize you while some will help you relax. Chamomile, geranium and lavender are known for their relaxing effects while the scent of the ylang ylang flower, rose, neroli and clary sage can uplift your mood. Rosemary is known for its energizing and calming effects while the eucalyptus, tea tree and pine is more popular as decongestant.
Benefits of aromatherapy massage
Aromatherapy massage offers a myriad of health benefits. It is suited for relieving stress, alleviating the mood and promoting a sense of well being. It is also suitable for people who are suffering from headaches and migraine, insomnia, and lower and upper back pains. The massage is usually done in slow, rhythmic and gentle strokes that soothe and ease the muscles and joints to relieve pain. It also increases the amount of oxygen that is absorbed in the muscles and promotes blood circulation that stimulates the limbic system in the brain. Therefore, releasing hormones that make the body feel calm, energized and relaxed. It also stimulates the release of the feel good hormones called endorphins that help in relieving stress. All in all, aromatherapy massages reduce muscle spasms and provides relief for muscle tension and stiffness, improve the flexibility of the joints, reduces the anxiety levels and blood pressure, and strengthens the immune system.
Stuff To Consider
If you have just gone through a surgery or is going through chemotherapy or radiation, you should avoid any forms of massage unless advised by your physician. This is also true for pregnant women especially in the first trimester. If you are pregnant and are allowed to get a massage, make sure that your therapist is certified in prenatal massage.
