The Many Meanings Of "gold Value"
There are many different nuances and meanings for the word value
. There is economic value, moral values, nutritional value, etc. Often, in literature, monetary terms used to express economic value are conflated onto ideas of moral, emotional, and sentimental human values, to reveal the way in which we have come to be identified with our material possessions. One of the greatest American authors of all time, Henry James, incorporated monetary terms to metaphorically describe the value of life for his characters in novels like Portrait of a Lady and The Bostonians. Our core values can often be discussed metaphorically with terms we all know and recognize- terms that signify money and material acquisition. The value of gold in a novel could metaphorically point to a core value if it is described as being worth more than a character for example. The expression, to pay dearly for something is a perfect example of this concept, as it can be read as one paid a large amount for whatever it is they acquired, but there is also a subtext that runs beneath the expression in that one could have paid dearly with something other than money, something more akin to their human values.
Economic terms which denote monetary value are frequently used to metaphorically convey our core values- layering the meaning of value altogether. Yet there are other values that are just as precious as the value of gold. It is easy to write another layer of meaning into terms like spent, cost, rich, depleted, etc. Another way to conflate economic terms onto human and moral values is to look at our values and traits as our most precious assets, and if someone attempts to take them away from us, it is no different from a thief robbing a bank. Even the idea of investing your time into something -work or a new relationship- is a common expression which conflates economic terminology onto a human emotion of feeling invested in
something or someone, which does not have to do with money. The reason these metaphors work so well is because our society and capitalist culture recognizes and easily understands the meaning, as money and accretion of personal wealth has been a building block of America since its roots.
Are your values for yourself and your family centered around love or money? Career or family? Each person has a different set of values and value systems which place significance differently according their own value system. One man may care more about the value of gold than human or cultural values. Each different culture has a unique set of values or restrictions. How much do you invest in restoring or maintaining your core values? The amount of effort you put into maintaining and improving your stock portfolio should also be put into personal improvement and a reflection on what core human values- whether it be freedom of love, education, spirituality, truth- truly matter the most in your life.
