The Many Uses Of Video Conferencing
It used to be that when people who weren't in the same area needed to meet
, they had two options. They could either travel to a central location, or they could meet by telephone. This remained true well into the eighties and early nineties, but has since changed thanks to video conferencing. Not sure exactly what that means? If you've ever used Skype, then you've participated in a video conference. And although many people claim they can't live without it, meeting by video wasn't an option for most people until about 1984.
While video conference was used as early as 1936, back then the technology was very expensive, and not suitable for long distances. The first hint at the use of video conferencing as it is today was in the 1980s, when the first commercial videoconferencing system came on the market in 1984. Expanding rapidly from the 1990s, Internet Protocol video conferencing allowed people to see each other over the Internet. As you can tell, the technology has grown in leaps and bounds since then.
These days, video conference is standard practice for many businesses, private organizations, schools and government offices. Its use is also very popular among Internet users, with video chat programs like Skype standard on many people's computers. Today, video conferencing allows people to see and talk to each other across the country, or across the world, with programs that are highly technical and expensive, or with programs that are completely free.
The type of video conference software that is best for you depends on what you will be using it for. If you are part of a major organization, you're tech department will likely choose the video conferencing software you'll use, which no doubt will be high quality. But if you just want video chat or conferencing to keep in touch with friends and family members, a free program would work just fine for your needs.
For home use, you won't need anything fancier than a web camera and a microphone, both of which come standard on new computers. You'll also need the video conference software, which comes installed on many computers as well, or can be found online and downloaded for free.
