Neodymium magnets are made from an alloy found in the earth, and they are often called rare earth magnets for this reason. Any natural substance that produces a magnetic field is referred to as a magnet because it attracts other substances, such as metals. Some magnets are permanent, meaning they constantly have a magnetic field. Neodymium types are made from a compound, or mixture, of boron, iron, and neodymium, and they are an example of a permanent type.

Car companies first began to use neodymium magnets in the early 80s to replace a more expensive type of magnetic compound. Soon after, neodymium compounds became popular for use in many applications in electronics, automobiles, and other machinery. The strength of this magnet has led it to be applied in new ways, like in jewelry clasps and toys. There are more fascinating uses for these rare earth magnets, however.

The Mars rovers use neodymium magnets to collect dust from the upper atmosphere of the Red Planet. The robotic arm of the rover uses them to attract any particles in the dust that can be magnetized, and these particles are then studied by the rovers Mssbauer spectrometer, a mineral analyzing computer. Two magnets are actually deployed for this purpose- a weaker one that filters out all the dust that does not contain iron and a stronger one specifically for iron dust.

Another interesting use for neodymium magnets is magnetic therapy. Practitioners of magnotherapy claim that certain health benefits can be gained by using magnets on different areas of the body. These can be used for specific ailments or injuries or for general feelings of lethargy or malaise. There are many products sold based on magnotherapy. Common ones are bracelets, shoe inserts, mattresses, and blankets. Although they cause no harm, there is not much proof that these items have any benefit. The field they produce is actually too weak to affect the hemoglobin in human blood. Some people claim it helps their pain, however, and this has lead to bolstered sales of such products.

There are also household and anecdotal uses for magnets, too. They can be used in just about every room for organization, as with refrigerator magnets, one can keep items stuck to one spot without using tacks or nails. Moms can secure items to the kids shirts without using sharp pins. A person can wear a variety of body jewelry without having holes put in disconcerting parts of the body. The fish tank can be easily cleaned without emptying it with the use of two magnets. One simply has to place the cloth on the inside of the tank between two magnets one inside the glass and one outside. Then he or she can wipe the grunge from the tank interior by moving the outside magnet around.

There are many uses for neodymium magnets. Some are scientific and fascinating, while others are a bit unconventional and maybe somewhat silly. Still other applications are practical and useful for just about anyone. One thing is for sure- there will never be a low demand for magnets, and there are new uses invented daily.
