Its roots go back to the beginning of the Roman Catholic Church and though it celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the actual date of December 25th is widely known to be a pagan holiday incorporated into the church later.

In the 21st century, this is the most economically charged time of year, and Christmas cards are the most widely purchased holiday commodity. The online encyclopedia states that Christmas cards are purchased in considerable quantities, and feature artwork, commercially designed and relevant to the season. The content of the design might relate directly to the holiday narrative with depictions of the Nativity of Jesus, or the Star of Bethlehem, or a white dove which can represent Peace on Earth. Other cards are more secular and can depict Christmas traditions, mythical figures such as Santa Claus, candles, and holly and baubles.

Christmas cards are so diverse in their themes that you could choose a different one for each of the hundreds of people you know, and still have hundreds of other themes leftover to send to friends next year. Also, every year card companies create and distribute cards of different themes when the holiday season comes around again, so every year you can choose from hundreds more. Basically, the Christmas card is a tradition that will never die.

Buying Christmas cards in bulk is a great way to save money and time, but if you buy in bulk you are stuck sending the same three to four cards to people, and eventually someone might run into someone who received the same card from you.

The Christmas card is a long standing tradition that has also gone electronic. Electronic greetings are often animated and totally unique.
