The Market For Mac Media Software
One of the fastest growing segments of the software market is media software for MACs
. These media software programs are equally available for Microsoft Windows, but taking the overall smaller market for Macintosh software into consideration the MAC segment has a fare more significant share.
This is especially due to the growing popularity of Apple products and multi-media devices. Although Apple products take a lead in the segment of mobile devices with iPod and iPhone, the market is still fragmented and far away from standardized formats. For most people it is common to own several devices of different age from several manufacturers serving diverse purposes from playing MP3 or videos, for gaming or multiple purposes like Apple TV and similar media centers. Data Carriers like DVD, CD, Blue Ray and the formats produced by recording devices make it even harder to standardize.
When media software first boomed about 3 years ago most manufacturers offered very specialized applications, that would only serve a very limited number of formats/functions and devices. For example you could buy an mp3 to iPhone converter, that would do exactly that and not a thing more. In the meantime software manufacturers have learned, that people now need more versatile and flexible software that helps them rip, convert, manage and burn media files from/for all their devices. Also, users have learned that usually integration of functionality saves money and time and increases quality and productivity.
As a result most quality software on the market is now available in suites (sometimes in addition to the focussed product). Although they might be more pricey than the single product, they might well save you money and time over the years.
The first thing to consider is whether the software is actively developed. There is no question that there are many great freeware or shareware products out there, but they have to be as professionally maintained as the Mozilla Project, Gimp or Open Office. Most likely a maintainer of freeware does not have the capacity to support the latest devices or fix bugs as quickly in the short run.
The second thing to consider is: Is the developer or manufacturer independent? This simply means, that a Microsoft or Apple company will be likely to leave out formats that are not favored by their very own operating system. Also, you might find that the software that comes with your hardware device will not support the file formats of the competition.
Obvious, but certainly worth mentioning is the overall product quality and usability of the software. So do not fall for either, the overpriced tool you don't need or the low quality software that doesn't do the job right.
