The Masaai Mara

This is a National Park on the south western part of Kenya. It is named after the Masaai people who are the traditional occupants of the land. The name mare which is a Masaai word means spotted. This is true because of the diverse life that is found in the area. Diverse vegetation and animal life spot the great national park. The Masaai Mara is well known for its annual migration of wildebeests, gazelles and zebras. This is a spectacle that has earned the title of the world's eighth wonder.

The Masaai Mara covers 1510 square kilometers. It is found in Kenya, a country in Eastern Africa. To the south, it borders Serengeti and to the west, the Siria Escarpment. Masaai pastoral ranches are to the north. The Masaai Mara is a continuation of the Serengeti in Tanzania. This great national park is served by the rivers Mara, Talek, and Sand. The Esoit Oloololo Escarpment in the Rift valley has the greatest wildlife count. This is because it is swampy all year round.

The most famous animals in the park are the wildebeests. This is because of there annual migration. Other animals found in the park are the big five. These are the Lion, the leopard, the elephant, the buffalo, and the rhino. Other species include the giraffes, the zebras, the cheetahs the antelopes among many others. Birds too make the Masaai Mara there home. These include the vultures, marabou storks, and secretary birds, hornbills, crowned cranes, ostriches, long-crested Eagles, and African pygmy-falcons.
