The Midland Hotel a Brief History

The Midland Hotel was originally built in 1933 by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. The building was designed by the Late Oliver Hill; The hotel boasts stunning views of Morecambe bay and on the other side views of the Railway station, which is said to be 'in homage' to the railway company who owned the hotel' back in 1933 [1].

The building was built with the intention to be unlike any hotel seen before on an English seaside resort. He accepted the opportunity to design the building with the statement ""you have here a unique opportunity of building the first really modern hotel in the country".Oliver Hill designed buildings that reflected the new way of life that the economy was moving into; with his international experience his style was that of a modernist, seen through the curves and lines that the hotel possesses.

When the building was opened in 1933 Architecture Illustrated dedicated 30 pages to the building in its September 1933 issue, writing that "The more it is looked at and it has been gazed upon by thousands and thousands during its erection the more it is admired" [2]. The Midland Hotel is now still described to be one of the most significant Art Deco buildings in the country. [3]'.

Since the building was erected it slowly went into steady decline, in the 1960's British sea side resort holiday still proved to be popular, thirty years later this had dropped dramatically with the economy going into decline. By the 1970's more and more people were choosing to go abroad with more access to transport. The hotel then went on to be sold to the Hutchinson Leisure Group who had big plans to bring the hotel up to date, this 1970 dcor took away the unique style that the Midland was built for and turned it into just an ordinary hotel.

Urban Splash bought the hotel and restored it to its original art deco style in 2006, they wanted to take away the 1970 alterations and take it right back to the modern designs that Eric Gill originally drew up. The Midland Hotel once again opened its doors to the public in 2008 and English Lakes Hotels overtook the management of the property in April 2009[4] and added it to their other five four star properties.
