The Minor Island - Menorca

On the western Mediterranean Sea, there is an archipelago named the Balearic Islands which belongs to Spain

. By size, the four largest islands are Majorca, Minorca, Ibiza, and Formentera. If you are person who prefers relaxation and beaches, Minorca is definitely your best choice.

The reason why this island is named Menorca or Minorca can be easily seen from its name itself which includes minor. In fact, this island got this name is simply because the fact that it is smaller that its nearby island Majorca.

Climate in Menorca

Located on the western Mediterranean Sea, weather inside the island is largely influenced by the sea. As a result, Menorca has a classic Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters.


In summer, the average temperature is 24C while in winter it is around 11C. Throughout the whole year, the island enjoys more than 300 days sunshine and as long as 11 hours of sunshine from July to September. The pleasant weather makes Menorca an excellent tourism destination all the year round, but some wise tourists would like to avoid the peak time and choose to come when the island is in a lower-key atmosphere.

The rainfall mainly happens in winter whereas in summers the rainfall could be none.

Besides, Menorca is the wettest and the coolest of the Balearic Islands since it is further north and further out to sea than the other islands.

The island is affected by the well-known tramuntana, a prevailing northerly wind that cools the climate especially in the winter and brings the city a nickname windy island.

What to see on the island

The island is known for its collection of megalithic stone monuments, namely navetes, taules and talaiots, which speak of a very early prehistoric human activity.

The naveta, meaning small ship, can be date back to the Bronze Age. It is a megalithic chamber tomb made up of medium-sized stones, which is unique to the Balearic island of Minorca. It was built with the cyclopean technique. However, for safety reason, it is not allowed to go inside to have a look or climb on a naveta; The Taula is a T-shaped stone momument; the Talaiots are the Bronze Age megaliths on the islands, the purpose of which might be for defense.

Menorca Airport


Menorca Airport, also called Mahn Airport is the airport serving the island of Menorca. It is located 4.5 km southwest of Mahn which is a municipality and the capital city of the Balearic Island of Minorca. With 48 airlines operating in the airport, Menorca Airport mainly serves four countries which are Spain, Ireland, Britain and Amsterdam.
