The Misunderstood Roles Of Airhostess
Majority of the airlines passengers would associate the term "airhostess" to a glamorous
young woman in sexy uniform, pampering customers at 35,000 feet in the air. The cabin crew would be around, ever willing to respond to the needs and wants of the passengers. As for the male passengers, they are more likely to talk about the look and the services of the crew when they meet their colleagues after the fight.
To some passengers, it appears that having a beautiful airhostess in flight is valued second only to the price of the tickets. No wonder, some airlines in the Asia, take full advantage of this and portray the beautiful airhostess as the main theme in the advertisements of the airlines. The in-flight services provided by these young ladies will be the selling point for the airlines.
Unfortunately, the majority of the people misunderstood the roles and the main duty of the of the cabin crews. The regulating authority for the country, through the related law, would have stated that the main role of the crew is to take care of the safety of the passengers. This also means that, the cabin crew are still required even though there is no services provided.
I was rather fortunate to witness the trainings and the examinations imposed on potential cabin crews. The trainings were conducted under four different modes, depending on the subject matters involved. The introduction will be conducted in the classroom trainings, the briefing and practical sessions in the mockup areas followed by the visit to the aircraft and finally the on-the-job observation and certification.
The safety and procedures aspect of the job is trained by specialist in the area. It is likely to be conducted by a separate group of trainers. (The services aspect of the job would be conducted by passengers' service trainers). In the airline that I know, a number of ex-military personnels were employed to teach the commanding style for the pilots and cabin crews.
In emergency situation, the crews, including the cabin crews, are expected to throw away the smiling, soft spoken gentle personality and play the role of commander, shouting and demanding the passengers to perform as required by the procedures. You will be amazed how the training had successful changed the timid young girls to demanding lady, shouting at the top of her voice, commanding the passenger to wear the life jacket and exist to the chosen door.
A short visit to the training mock up aircraft will demonstrate the capability of the airhostess. When the "captain" announced the emergency situation, the mode of the flight changed. The cabin crews that were smiling just a minute ago took different position, the smiles transformed to serious stone-face, commanding and telling in no uncertain term what is expected.
As simulated 'clean' smoke filled up the cabin, the floor and emergency exit lights illuminated and we could hear the crash landing sound (only from the loud speakers) followed by violent vibration. The captain gave the evacuation command and the crew jumped and open the door, the escape slide deployed, and as soon as the 'safe to evacuate indicator' popped out, the crew started to shout and waving her hands demanding the passengers to evacuate at once.
Although it was only simulate, the situation was so real. The passengers played their roles and some were emotionally involved in the game that was played.
So next time your fly and served by the sweet smiling and soft spoken ladies, please remember that the same ladies can change and will kick your back off if you do not follow her instruction in emergency situation.
