The Modern Patios

The modern patio is probably of oriental origin

. In the Far East, where women were secluded from the outside world, homes were built so they surrounded the garden area thus forming a patio.

However, over the centuries credit has also been given to the people of Spain, to the Moors, and to others for developing the patio as we know it today.

The highest American development of the patio can be found in and around New Orleans and in certain sections of California. In this country, however, patios are usually enclosed on only three sides by the walls of the residence, the fourth part of the enclosure consisting of a wrought iron fence, a wall, or a hedge.

Patio Surface

Patios are most often surfaced with flagstone or brick and defined when the sun goes down with solar garden lights. Few if any plants are used. Those that do occur are typically potted specimens with bright foliage or spectacular flowers. In addition to these, vines may be used on grill work, banisters, and the balustrades of balconies or porches.

The ranch house has its own form of patio, made when the building forms a shallow U. The area inside the U is paved and all or part of it is sheltered by an awning or permanent roof. This makes it available in all kinds of weather.

Air Movement

Perhaps the most cogent objection to a patio is that the enclosure virtually shuts off all air movement. This means that the patio is most enjoyable in early spring and late fall when it is pleasant to sit and absorb the welcome sunshine while sheltered from the wind.

Many designers make the patio appear cooler by including a small mirror pool. A fountain with its restful rhythm of falling water can be added to aid the impression.

Patio Advantages

The patio has a definite place in small home grounds design since it gives a good vantage point from which to enjoy the rest of the ground. Since it is ordinarily paved, it can be immediately used after a spring or summer shower.

You should, by the way, have at least one step leading down from the patio into the garden.

Screens

Some people add to the enjoy. went of the patio area by screening it against bothersome insects. Others, who live in sections of great summer heat, arrange to sleep in these screened-in areas that are located so as to face the garden rather than the public area.
