The Modern Telephone
When Alexander Graham Bell first invented the telephone
, he probably never imagined that it would evolve into a device that can connect with the whole world over. The telephone is no longer just a phone, it is everything electronic in a small little package.
It was not too long ago that the telephone was a rather large device that was only in wealthy people's homes and used only occasionally. When the phone went wireless, people were skeptical about its advantages, and thought that it would be fad that would soon pass.
The cellular phone has only gotten more popular, however, and now the brokers on Wall Street aren't the only people who use them. It seems like everyone in the world has a cell phone now, from little kids to your great-grandma, and each use it on a daily basis.
The telephone used to only be able to make calls through a series of wires and thousands of operators who hooked up the connections to different phone lines; a long process that was both costly and time consuming. Now, a phone call from Idaho can be received in China in a split second; without wires or operators.
Everything is now wireless, and this is possible through signal towers and satellites that allow the entire world to stay connected to one another. Since everything is wireless, it allows our cell phones to function as more than just a mere calling device.
The cell phone is used to send text messages, surf the internet, watch movies, listen to music, and send endless information out to the world; all of this in the palm of your hand. All of these capabilities are possible in a device that is smaller than a deck of cards-it is really quite a remarkable thing.
Text messages are a fairly new addition the the capabilities of a cell phone, but they came before any other multi-media functions that are now standard on telephones. Text messages allow people to send written messages to another person's phone or email; it is quick, easy and one of the most used functions on a telephone. In fact, many people spent more time text messaging on their cell phone than they do actually talking on it.
Surfing the internet on your phone is growing in popularity, and has proved to be a useful tool. All of the world's information is in your hands at all times, no matter where you are. People use this to find directions to a restaurant, check movie times, look up quick facts, and even check their social networking sites.
Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Foursquare, all of these sites keep people connected, and they are all accessible form your mobile telephone. This allows you to be connected to everyone you know, and a few you don't. These are the tools available in phones; and with all of this information available to everyone at all times, it is hard to image what we would do without it.
Streaming video on your phone still has its glitches, a lot of video has more bandwidth than some cell phones can handle, and a lot of video is just too slow to wait and watch for. We are spoiled in the sense that yes, we do have video on a three-inch screen that can come anywhere with us, but with everything moving at such a fast pace, we want things fast and we want things now; and if that can't happen we move on.
Music on the phone is a great idea; people always have their cell phone on them and they almost always want to be listening to music. Combining the two together in one sleek package allows people to have more while carrying around less.
The modern phone has revolutionized the way we live life. It keeps us connected in every way possible, and changes the way we communicate with everyone around us.
