The recently released Motorola Backflip offers a great range of features along with impressive styling

. With a similar appearance to Apples iPhone, this handset also features a full QWERTY keyboard which flips out from behind the screen. In addition to this, the handset also has the option of touch screen navigation.

To start off, well look at the camera. Boasting 5MP (2560x1920 pixel resolution), this offers a means to take decent quality images. It includes both autofocus and LED flash, which simplifies the action of taking quality images, even when lighting conditions are poor. As an alternative method of image capture, it also has the capability to shoot video in CIF quality at a rate of 30 fps.

Primary means of connection to cellular networks is by class 12 GPRS and EDGE. HSDPA is available in areas covered by 3G, at speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps. Where a signal is available from a local wireless internet router, Wi-Fi offers the chance to attain a much faster internet connection. Bluetooth and micro USB offer additional connectivity options.

The Motorola Backflip features an internal phonebook which can store a practically unlimited number of entries, and this includes the Photocall feature, whereby a photo of a contact is displayed on screen whenever they are in contact. Internal memory is in the shape of 256MB RAM and 512 MB ROM for storage of media files and contact info etc. Should additional storage be required, the micro SD slot can be utilised by installing a memory card of up to 32GB, however a 2BG card is installed as standard.


The handset measures 108x53x15.3mm and weighs 133 grams. Whilst this may not be the lightest handset on the market, its weight is forgivable, seeing that a full QWERTY keyboard is included, and this is a small price to pay for the added functionality that this feature offers. The TFT capacitive touchscreen measures a generous 3.1 inches, and utilises pixels set at 320x480 to display up to 256,000 colours, for good quality display.

As expected form any new handset, the Motorola Backflip alerts users to incoming calls and messages via a combination of ringing and vibration, with the added option to utilise MP3 and WAV files as ringtones. For handsfree talking, a speakerphone with stereo speakers is included along with a 3.5mm audio jack for handsfree headsets.

A long list of additional features makes the Backflip a very appealing phone for a wide range of users. Music fans will appreciate the versatile media player, whilst social networkers are sure to be impressed with the applications offering direct live access to sites such as MySpace, FaceBook and Twitter.

Its unique styling and impressive list of specifications are sure to win the Motorola Backflip many fans. Although touch screen navigation is an appealing feature, the inclusion of a QWERTY keyboard is sure to impress fans of more classic technology.
