The Most Beautiful Hiking Trails In Southern England
England may be a very small country in global terms with not the most pleasant climate
. It is highly populated and urbanised. But there are still many beautiful walking routes which are enchanting with their stunning landscapes, varied nature environments and fascinating wildlife. Once you have the right outdoor gear and waterproof clothing, being a smaller country can actually be an advantage. You can get to the beautiful spots relatively easily and quickly.
Let's start in the South of England. More highly populated and urbanised than the North, you may think there is less untouched spots to be enjoyed. But travel down to Devon and Cornwall and you may think you are in a different country this highly rural region has amazing coastal and forest walks. The Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall offers stunning walks along this rocky coast where you can see how the Gulf Stream must have caught a few ships unawares in the past. There are also some other mysteriously named areas along this stretch of coast such as Lion's Den and Devil's Frying Pan. Exmoor national park is also a popular destination in the South West of England with its famous ponies, hills and Coleridge Way, named in honour of the British poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
Other well-known beautiful walks in the South of England include the historic Glastonbury Tor in Somerset. Home to the legendary music festival in June every year, this mystical town is also home to a medieval tower in a pretty landscape which was said to be a haunt of King Arthur and his knights. And another favourite spot is Blakeney Freshes on the North Norfolk coast with its dramatic expansive beaches and tides. This nature reserve is home to many migrating sea birds that come to feast on the pickings in low tide. So you can enjoy a beautiful big sky and landscape and bustling wildlife to boot.
As with any walking in climates such as England, it is important to equip yourself with the right outdoor gear. I'm afraid it is true that it the weather can be very changeable here and it is possible to experience more than one season in one day. It is still relatively mild though, so a base layer, mid and outer layer of outdoor gear should suffice even in winter. Waterproof outdoor clothing is a must at any time of the year, both waterproof jackets and
waterproof trousers and even gaters are a prudent investment to be able to best enjoy the beautiful walks southern England has to offer.
