The Most Common Signs Of The Potential Onset Of Dementia
Aging produces some unwelcome changes, and one of the most pressing issues for elderly people is forgetting basic things
. If this loss of memory starts to happen with greater frequency, then there is a possibility that this may be a common sign of dementia or Alzheimers, and that it might be time to start considering care to help manage the effects of these conditions. Dementia is referred to the decline of mental abilities while the said person is alert and awake, to the point of interfering in daily tasks and interactions. The decline may involve memory, decision skills, communication and thinking skills. There are several signs of dementia; here are three of the most common:
Extreme memory loss: Forgetting things here and there is considered normal for people who are growing older. However, if this memory loss starts to happen on a regular basis so much that it disrupts the ability to function daily, then this is cause for concern. Early changes in short term memory may at first occur occasionally and may occur in subtle ways. The change in ability may either be noticed by the elderly person, or someone who interacts daily with the elderly person. Examples of this memory loss include not remembering important details from a brief newspaper story that you just read, struggling to remember the name of a person or a specific product when talking with someone, forgetting important things like your wallet and others.
Forgetting their location: Forgetting ones location and getting lost is another sign of dementia. This refers to those that lose their way in a familiar area, like close to home. This is cause for alarm as it can be potentially dangerous to the elderly person as well as distressing. If you notice your loved one constantly forgetting where things are located in space or losing their sense of direction in familiar surroundings, then this is a cause for concern with regard to dementia.
Withdrawal from a job or friends: When an aging person starts to forget important things, they can often become frustrated and scared of this fact, and will want to conceal this from other people. One way of dealing with this fear is to withdraw as much as possible from interacting with people that they work with or friends that they normally associate with. If you notice this happening with your aging loved one, then this is a common sign of the potential onset of dementia.
