The Most Popular Diamond Cuts
When it comes to marriage or an anniversary, the diamond is the most popular stone
. This is because of its symbolism of eternal love and commitment which is linked to its image of being indestructible. Those who would like to use a diamond will find themselves overwhelmed because there are numerous types of
diamond cuts to choose from. To make this process somewhat simpler, here are some short descriptions of the most popular diamond cuts.
Round Brilliant. The round brilliant is easily the most popular diamond cut available. It was developed in 1919 by Marcel Tolkowsky and is mathematically based in order to ensure maximum shine. The round brilliant cut is generally used when the diamond is in an octahedral shape as this preserves most of the diamond and allows the creation of two gems. This diamond cut has 58 facets on it; most of which are on the top section of the diamond. The diamond itself is round; although from a side view it looks like a pentagon. The reason for this diamond cuts popularity is its presence on the standard solitaire engagement ring.
Princess Cut. This diamond cut was at its height of popularity in 1961 and is experiencing a resurgence in popularity because it is an unusual cut and because it is can be used on an engagement ring with a solitaire setting. This diamond cut has 144 facets, and is a square shape. It also involves less work and preserves more of the diamond as it requires less cutting and thus creates a more affordable diamond.
Emerald. This diamond cut is unique in that it is rectangular and has rectangular facets. This cut is categorized as a step cut because its facets look like steps on a staircase. The only downside of the emerald diamond cut is that inclusions are fairly visible, so it is best to get a stone that has at least a VS2 Clarity level so that the number of visible inclusions is kept to a minimum. The emerald cut is also the original Asscher cut and thus is often categorized as such.
Radiant. The radiant diamond cut is box-like, but has trimmed corners. It is usually set with other diamonds, such as the round and baguette diamond cuts. This diamond cut was invented in 1977 by Henry Grossbard and is a combination of the emerald and round brilliant cuts so as to allow the maximum amount of light reflection. The radiant diamonds reflection creates a kaleidoscope effect.
Pear. This diamond cut is also known as the teardrop cut because of its single point and rounded opposite side. It is a unique cut, which makes it popular. The pear diamond cut is perhaps the most customizable because it will vary by size. The cut contains 58 facets which is enough facets to create maximum shine and light reflection. The pear cut is actually one of the oldest cuts, being created in the 1400s in Belgium.
Asscher. This diamond cut is almost identical to the emerald except that it is square and has rectangular facets. Like the emerald cut, this diamond cut is a step cut and has the same downsides as the emerald cut. Thus, it is a good idea to stick to a VS stone. This cut has 74 facets. The Asscher cut has also become a category for all square cut diamonds.
