The Most Recent Google Change

The most popular internet search engine at this point in time is actually Google

. If you ask anyone a question and they don't know the solution they are likely to tell you to simply Google it. Not many years back they would have to you to Ask Jeeves or look on Yahoo or something like that. These have gone out of fashion it seems. Which means that any search engine optimisation needs to be done with Google in mind as that's where the majority of the traffic will come from.

For many years Google appeared to be very content to allow search engine optimisation go on unhindered. All it took to get a web site to position well in search engines was enough hyperlinks of relevant anchor-text. Google does appear to enjoy throwing a spanner in the works every now and again though and they threw a few spanners in during the last couple of months.

The very first update that caused chaos in the search engine optimisation world was the Panda update that took place in Feb 2011. A great deal of previously high ranking sites found themselves dropped very low within the rankings where they had previously enjoyed very high rankings and high levels of traffic. The concept of this panda update was to get rid of the thin affiliate marketer type sites. This affected only 12% of the high ranking English websites. Google appeared to be making a move to trying to increase the quality of the sites that it displayed in its rankings. Nothing wrong with this idea unless your good quality site was caught in the crossfire and was penalised when it really should have been left alone.

Then there was the latest update in April 2012. The actual penguin update triggered much more chaos in the search engine optimisation world. The penguin update targeted things such as onsite content quality, over optimization and low quality backlink building. Literally millions of websites were impacted by this update. Those sites that did not do much in the way of backlink building or were cautious about how exactly they built their own hyperlinks were usually untouched and some even saw their rankings go up. A lot of high profile sites and even a quantity of high quality sites were significantly impacted though. A l to of innocent sites were caught within the update and the manual penalties that were passed out like candy. Websites hosted on a single server or registered by a person associated with a penalised site were also instantly penalised. A lot of people had their entire hosting server deindexed unless the website was protected by WHOIS.

We are still unsure how to get a site to recover from the devastation of the penguin update and Google continues rolling out adjustments to both the penguin and panda algorithms that have made rankings really unstable. The overall consensus is that we will need to wait and find out what happens in spite of the many so called Search engine optimization experts who claim to have found a solution or a pattern to the penalties and the way to fix the penalised sites.
