The Motorola Backflip Is A Striking Handset
With an initial appearance similar to that of the Apple iPhone
, Motorola have produced an impressive handset in the Backflip. Utilising a touch screen and QWERTY keyboard, the phone also features internet access, 5 megapixel camera and the Android Operating System.
256MB RAM and 512MB ROM provide internal storage for files such as music tracks and video clips. A micro SD slot is also included for this purpose which has a pre-installed 2BG memory card. This can be upgraded though to 32GB for extra storage. The internal phonebook can store a vast number of entries and includes Photocall.
The ability to assign WAV and MP3 music files as ringtones gives users the chance to customise their handset and hear the song of their choice whenever the phone rings. As expected, ringing works alongside vibration to alert user to incoming calls and messages. A 3.5mm audio jack and a built in speakerphone system provide options for hands free talking.
The Backflip offers a long list of additional features for great everyday functionality. These include a digital compass, Google Maps with Street View, a handy organiser and T9. Dedicated applications offer direct access to websites such as Photobucket and Picasa, as well as Social Networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. A versatile media player as well as pre-installed games offer options for keeping users entertained.
In order to connect to networks and internet, several connectivity features are utilised. Class 12 versions of EDGE and GPRS provide the primary method of connecting to cellular networks, whilst internet connection is provided by 3G via a HSDPA connection at 7.2 Megabytes per second. Also, in areas where a wireless internet router is located, Wi-Fi connectivity kicks in to provide a faster internet browsing experience. In order to connect to other phones and computers, Bluetooth and micro USB are also provided.
In order to take high quality snapshots, a 5 Megapixel camera is built in. Operating at a pixel resolution of 2560x1920 pixels, it includes such features as autofocus and LED flash to simplify the task of taking photos. An alternative method of capture is video which is shot in CIF quality at 30 frames per second.
The Backflip itself measures 108x53x15.3mm and weighs just 133 grams which is impressive given the fact that a QWERTY keyboard is included. An attractive handset finished in Platinum Silver, the front of the phone is uncluttered and simple, whilst the QWERTY keyboard flips out from behind the screen, hence its name. The TFT capacitive touchscreen measures 3.1 inches for ease of use and displays content in great quality thanks to a pixel layout of 320x480 displaying 256,000 colours.
Given its great range of features operated by the increasingly popular Android OS, and its unique styling, the Motorola Backflip offers appeal on all fronts and looks set to be a popular handset.
