The Motorola Backflip-an Overview

Amongst the barrage of Smartphones and Sliders sit the Motorola Backflip

, something a little bit different from the rest thanks to its unusual flip design, but not to the detriment of other features.

The customary camera facility is obviously included on the Backflip. This snapper is a 5 million pixel affair and produces very pleasing results. Images appear clear and colours are reproduced very well. An LED flash has also been fitted, useful for when those lighting conditions just are not right for the perfect photograph. Autofocus, geo tagging and digital zoom also add to what is a fairly impressive camera package, video footage can even be captured at a QVGA resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. The all important question of storage is always asked when talking of any multi media use, and thanks to the addition of a microSD card slot the rather poor 256 MB of onboard memory can be expanded up to 16GB. Of course this additional memory is not only useful for photograph but also for audio and video storage. Such material is supported in a variety of formats on the Backflip, including MP3, AAC and AAC+ for audio and MP4 video files.

Video footage needs a good quality screen to be viewed clearly, and the Motorola Backflip boasts a 3.1" capacitive touchscreen which works very well. Displaying over 262 thousand colours this screen show a relatively high resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. Despite this screen being touch operated, Motorola noted that the major problem with this is that you need to physically touch the screen to achieve a result, thus blocking what is a relatively small viewing area. Enter the "BackTrackpad", Motorolas cleverly placed navigation pad on the rear of the phone, keeping your fingers well out of the way of what you are actually looking at. The Qwerty keypad itself is actually on the back of the handset, rather than being hidden away underneath the screen. This allows the Backflip to perform its trademark action, and in one movement we have a screen in landscape mode with a perfectly positioned keypad directly beneath it. One would assume this keypad add a lot to the dimensions of the phone, but at 108 x 53 x 15.3mm and a weight of 135 grammes, it gives a lot of models that lack the keypad a run for their money.

The Motorola Backflip is different, but with the hundreds of phones available this is no bad thing. A good screen, inclusion of Android OS and a nice array of features make it an appealing model to most people.
