, flip QWERTY keyboard, the Motorola Flipout is a next generation smartphone and combining these different technologies opens up a new form factor category. The touch, QWERTY flip phone utilises the latest in Androids superb operating systems and the MotoBlur overlay provides a colourful and user friendly interface to play with. A digital camera system and full multimedia section will keep you entertained and the Flipouts web capabilities are brilliant.

The 2.8 inch QVGA display is the main tool for interface interaction; the capacitive technology enables multi-touch control, and though the screen barely has enough real estate for one finger it is nice to have the option there. With the Flipouts compact dimensions it is both palm and pocket friendly and in general it is a very good looking handset. The cute little device is available in a whole range of colours so you can find the shade to suite you. The keyboard has been mounted via a pivot hinge based in the bottom corner of the casing. It feels very sturdy and flips out flush to the bottom of the screen so it is very precise. The keys are smooth, making for comfortable typing and protrude just enough to individualize them but so as to hamper the flip out motion.

The Android 2.1 platform is a great foundation for the MotoBlur interface and the 600MHz TI processor sends the phone through menus and web pages at reasonable pace. The software package on the Flipout is a great base for up and coming updates from Google with the Android 2.2 Froyo on the way. The application based overlay integrates your friends from social networks with contacts in your phonebook and provides a steady stream of tweets, messages and status updates direct to your home screen, these appear as Happenings, and this feature on older Moto models was a little sticky as it overloaded the phone with more information than it could handle, but the enhanced interface filters the information so you only get what you want.

All of your online activities are supported; the Flipout is loaded with a full web browser, YouTube integration, e-mail and IM. All internet based functions are supported by turbo speed 3G network coverage and Wi Fi which is perfect when nearby a local wireless hotspot. Where messaging is concerned you are presented with a ton of options; you get your straight forward SMS and MMS, along with e-mail and IM as previously mentioned. The messaging hub also offers up dedicated clients for your social networks with Facebook, Twitter, Bebo and MySpace the obvious candidates. And to save you opening each individual application to view messages Motorola have thrown in a universal inbox which streams messages and e-mails across all accounts and displays them in one place. Easy!

How have Motorola packed all this advanced technology in such a small device? Well, they have had to cut back where the camera is concerned, a 3MP effort is not usual for Motorola; this will comfortably handle your basic photography needs while capturing those special moments in the form of videos. The video player will manage playback of multiple codecs and the music player will file and play your tunes. A 3.5mm audio jack allows for personal listening, with your own headphones if you wish. The memory can be expanded up to 32GB thanks to the microSD slot.

Motorola have supplied the smartphone market with an intuitive Android powered, 3G effort which provides buyers with a user friendly interface, links to social networking and e-mailing, and access to thousands of downloadable apps thanks to the Android Market.
