The Mystical Om
Considered a sacred and mystical syllable in Hinduism and some other religions that are from India
, Om considered as the greatest of all sacred formulas or the mantra. This syllable is made up of three sounds: a, u and m. This is why in some texts it would be spelled as Aum instead of Om.
The Om symbolizes many important triads. Among them are the major gods of Hinduism: Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma; the Holy Vedic scriptures Sama, Yajur and Rg and the worlds of the earth, heaven and atmosphere. It is believed that this mystic syllable the essence of the whole universe. The Om mentioned at the start, ends of all Hindu prayers, meditations and chants, and generously used between Jaina and Buddhist rituals, too.
Texts that concern philosophical speculation called Upanishads have made discussions about this mystic symbol. It is said to be used during Yoga and would also be associated in auditory meditation techniques. The Puranas have even put it for sectarian use while the Viashnava refers to the sounds, a - u - m, as a trinity that made up of Vishnu and his wife and the worshipper himself.
This makes the Om embody the essence of the whole universe as believed by the Hindus. This concept is further explored by a philosophical belief of the Indians that God created sound first and then the universe emerged from this sound. This is why the Om is considered by the Indians as a very sacred sound since it is the reason why everything around us exists and continuously holds everything together.
The writing of the sacred symbol of Om on the beginning and end of meditations, prayers and mantras was known to begin in the 6th century. They even consider a sacred ground found in Indian Himalayas that is around 6191 m from the peak which they call an Om Pharvat. It is highly honored because it has a pattern of snow deposition that looks a lot like the symbol of the Om.
The symbol of Om can be seen almost everywhere in Nepal or India where it has become a common sign of theology and philosophy. Newly born children would be cleansed and the scared Om will be written on their tongue using honey. Not only is it used as a holy sign but a form of contemporary art as well in the form of tattoos.
