The Necessity For Change In The Military Procurement Strategy

The United State Department of Defense deals with most military contracts

. The department aims to make optimum use of taxpayer's money while offering quality equipment and services to the armed forces. There is an acute need for effective and judicious defense programs as increasing focus on the federal deficit is likely to lead to budget cuts.

With several projects costing hundreds of millions, defense procurement has never been cheap. Sometimes these programs do not even generate the kind of results that were expected, making them very expensive experiments that always have a chance of failing. Now, with the economy close to a second recession and with spending being reduced, it is time for the DoD to make sure that their programs are both viable and cost effective.

DoD procurement has to change, and change quickly. Ensuring that all their programs lead to desired results efficiently is not an option, but a necessity. It is not efficient to have a missile defense program that costs $2 billion dollars but may produce results fifteen or twenty years in the future, and is just as likely to fail. In order to attain this objective, DoD branch handling procurement and contracting policies will have to depend on integrity and excellent leadership. Defense projects need to be selected based on their possible advantages, not just their cost.

Costly programs are frequently favored by DoD procurement as they bring them into limelight and demonstrate US military power. Opting for contacts based on their significance and possible benefits to the military is the best policy for the defense department under the present economic conditions. As the department already holds more than enough weapons, signing another weapons contracts is not recommended. It may be more important to focus on other areas where the military is lacking.

A major source of concern for the United States is the amount of money that was paid to contractors and sub contractors in Afghanistan and Iraq. Returns provided by around $20 billion worth defense procurement investment in the contract are little. Government should consider awarding these contracts to the US organizations rather than the local subcontractors as these are more reliable, although it can be slightly inconvenient.

The US department of defense is responsible for optimum use of the taxpayer's hard-earned money.
