The Necessity of AS9120 Certification

AS9120 is the universal standard for distributors of aircraft components

. As a manufacturer, parts are built using rigid ISO9001 procedures that include conformity for aircraft specific parts such as gaskets, electronics and other original equipment manufactured (OEM) parts. It was designed specifically to address traceability, control, and the availability of manufactured parts as they pass through distributors.

AS9120 certification by the distributors ensures all OEM parts meet certain requirements and can be traced back in the event is becomes necessary. This standard also applies for parts bought in bulk and lated distributed to multiple customers.

This certification does not relate to parts that have been repaired or rebuilt, but new OEM parts only.

AS9120 consists of over 100 specific requirements that outline how parts are received, tracked, and finally distributed to aircraft industries, including the defense and space industries. Obtaining AS9120 certification provides an additional measure that your company can meet aerospace requirements. It is a required certification if the company is interested in reselling or distributing the parts.

Implementation is very similar to receiving an ISO9001 certification or the AS9100 certification. The first step is to perform a gap analysis of current procedures your company has in place for handling the OEM parts. The additional requirements may have to be written if they are not already in place. Next, you should perform an audit for compliance. When you have completely documented and audited the procedures for compliance, you will need to hire a registrar to perform the official AS9120 audit. When all the requirements have been met, and the audit passed, you will be awarded your AS9120 certification.

As with all quality management systems, it is imperative that this certification remain current. Periodic internal and external audits will become a part of continuing your certification, but it is critical to having the ability to distribute parts to the aerospace industry.
