The Need For An Integrated Security System For Modern Office Security

The smooth functioning of a business actually requires the security of its physical

assets such as office infrastructure and premises; security of its information assets (which in knowledge-based industries is perhaps as critical as anything else the business does) and then, last but not the least, the physical security of its critical resource, the human capital.

Limitations of manned guarding

Many small to medium sized businesses still rely on manned guarding- with one or two guards- responsible for handling office security. Manned guarding has its own benefits and the physical presence of a security guard can act as a deterrent.

However, the security demands of a modern office are significantly different and not just limited to preventing forced intrusion. Moreover, protecting the business interests of an organization require internal monitoring as well, as all it takes is a couple of unscrupulous elements in the office wreck havoc for the business.

Relying on electronic security systems

Consequently, there is a strong business case for a modern office to opt for and rely on a more sophisticated electronic security system to complement any manned guarding that it may choose to go with. Depending on how the company plans to monitor its security, the company can decide on the type of security it wants to go with. For example, it can opt to go with only a surveillance system that comprises mainly of security cameras and digital video recorders; or, it can go for an access control system combined with a intruder detection system. Getting into the merits and demerits of each of these systems independently will be addressed in a separate article on the criteria for choosing the right security system for a business.

However, cost and budget permitting, the recommendation would really be to opt for an integrated security system that combines video surveillance, access control and intruder detection, as the advantages are numerous. For one, a lot of access control systems these days come with time and attendance systems integrated which can then also be integrated into the payroll software of a company. Then, modern access control systems can be a lot more advanced, featuring biometrics such as fingerprint readers or face recognition system, ensuring a much more robust security environment in the office.
