The Need For Pilots Skyrockets

Perhaps you dreamed of flying as a child

Perhaps you dreamed of flying as a child. Seeing that shuttle launch inspired you, and since then you have been consumed. Perhaps your childhood hero took to the skies and you know that is where you were meant to be. Maybe you just love adventure or realize that being a pilot can be a fulfilling and lucrative career. Whatever the reason behind your desire, the desire is there, and it needs flight lessons.

Now more than ever, pilots are in demand. By demand, I mean exceptional demand. In the years leading up to and during the recession, airlines struggled to stay afloat and cut back to the bare minimum of staff. As air travel and methods of security have been retooled and fine-tuned, the public has re-launched their desire to take to the skies. With this increased demand, Airlines like Virgin Airways and AirTran are filling the void with affordable rates and luxurious options for both the casual flyer and the well-informed businessperson.

Boeing Aircraft recently released a forecast stating that the industry will need 466,650 trained pilots, as well as nearly 600,000 maintenance workers in the next 20 years. Many pilots will be moving on to the retirement chapter of their lives, and these positions will need to be filled quickly. The dearth of qualified candidates has been so strong in the recent years that American carriers and other companies that offer flight services have had to import pilots from other countries. The demand for skilled and highly trained pilots in America will call for nearly 100,000 pilots in the next 20 years, and there is demand across the world that is comparable. In fact, what is known as the "Asian market" will need double the amount required in the United States, with an overwhelming need of 200,000 + pilots. There is a market and there is high demand. If there was ever a time to buy your goggles and hit the books, it is now. The fleet size of current carriers is expected to jump from nearly 20,000 to over 30,000 by 2030 and there will need to be pilots to fly those planes, and mechanics and flight controllers to ease the burden on the current workforce.

Buckle in and suit up

The demand for pilots is so far being under reported, but many carriers, especially foreign companies and newer companies, are taking the need for pilots seriously. Some companies are offering to pay for training and costs as a part of the package for helping to meet their needs, and European and Asian carriers and companies are recruiting right at the flight school campuses. The same study that sites the huge need for pilots also goes on to state that passenger traffic will increase in emerging markets by 5.1% and cargo traffic will increase an estimated 5.6 percent in the same period of 20 years. With the new money from emerging markets, as well as the increased demand for flight, it is not very hard to grasp the opportunity that is waiting.

The new opportunities are not simply in being a company pilot however. Private helicopter pilots are needed, as are private jet and plane. The maintenance staff for all of the carriers, as well private companies in the United States and abroad is as in high demand as well, if not more so.

Becoming a pilot

The desire to become a pilot is the driving force, now what you need is information. Depending on where you live, there is most likely an established flight school near you. If there is not, there are well-respected and thorough institutes across the country. A great place to start learning more about what to expect is the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA.) There site has a wealth of information on what to expect, and the regulations and guidelines you will need to know. There are manuals, as well as FAQ's as well as a list of established and respected schools that offer pilot training, as well as other courses that relate to flight.

Best of luck in your journey. The only thing left to do is pull up your landing gear and take off.
