The New Samsung Omnia 7-A Review
Samsung seem to have hit the spot again with the release of the excellent new Omnia 7 handset. The Super AMOLED screen together with the new Windows 7 operating system form Microsoft seems a match made in heaven.
Starting with a look at the new operating system, and two things are immediately obvious. Firstly with regards to look and layout, the display looks great. With many consumers used to offerings on Android and Apple platforms, the tile based layout found here looks colourful, modern and all together different. The great screen really makes the most of this, everything looks vibrant and full of colour. The screen layout is made up from a series of different sized tiles that cascade vertically. The second pleasing aspect of the OS is how easy it is to use. The tiles are large, and this allows a host of other important information to be displayed on them. The people tile for example constantly displays pictures of your friends, as well as keeping you up to date with relevant posts on sites such as Facebook. The calendar option let you know when your next appointment is, and if their are any features not listed on the homescreen, they can be easily pinned to it at your convenience. 3G, EDGE and GPRS ensure that not only the homescreen is kept up to date, but also that push notifications are supported for features such as e mails, instantly informing you of incoming mail. Wireless LAN B/G/N is available when you can connect via WiFi. Despite being one of the larger mobile handsets currently available, when in use the model does not feel as large as it dimesions would have you think.
The 122.4 x 64.2 x 11mm measurements are necessary to accommodate the screen which is where the Samsung Omnia 7 really surpasses itself. At 4" the screen is perfect for nearly all tasks. The virtual keypad in both vertical and landscape mode is well laid out and makes texting and e mailing an easy task. The screen is also perfect for displaying footage that is shot with the phones 720P high definition video camera. The 480 x 800 resolution is a major factor in this quality, as is the technology used. This is Super AMOLED, helping produce deep colours and great visibility whether indoors or outside. The usual array of sensors are present in the Omnia 7, with an accelerometer performing auto rotation and a proximity sensor helpfully shutting off the screen during calls. Following in the footsteps of the excellent Galaxy S, the Omnia 7 continues the high standard with a marvellous screen and a stylish and modern look. Throw into the equation the new OS and you really do have a near perfect mobile phone.
The Samsung Omnia 7 and the Motorola Backflip are available now.
