The Next Step for Video
A recent industry report on the result of 3D for film and television production companies stated that video in 3D will be the most important innovation for film since colour all that way back in the sixties. Some observers have disregarded this as an empty statement, nonetheless recent events suggest that the authors of the research may have been on the money.
The first thing to point out is the enormous success of 3D at the box office, especially with the likes of Avatar. Although they have the advantage of being able to charge more per ticket than two dimensional rivals, 3D films have been racking up some head-turning results.
Unarguably, they're not perfect for everyone, and the industry has suffered a tad because of the weakness of some of the films. A weak film in 3D is still a weak film, but because most 3D films have been eager to advertise their extra dimension, it has brought some negative publicity to the format from noted film critics.
One of the factors behind Avatar's astonishing success was that it was originally filmed in 3D, and therefore everything was perfectly set up for 3D screens. A number of films following in the wake of Cameron's epic have attempted to 'retro fit' 3D, which means taking a two dimensional film and trying to make it function in 3D and this obviously does not stand up to criticism.
It is generally said that where the film industry goes, the television companies will follow, and of late there have been a number of productions created in 3D.Skyhave led the way with sporting coverage, and also with nature programmes which have proved to be remarkably popular.
One weakness with 3Dtv is that there simply aren't enough 3D televisions around, and until there are enough programme manufacturers aren't keen to create them, it's a kind of vicious circle. Now, however, with so many 3D films and a growing number of television programmes being produced, the television manufacturers are beginning to release more models.
So far, just about all the efforts at 3D tvs have involved the use of glasses, this has made some consumers uncomfortable. Now, though, technology is being perfected that will provide the opportunity for 3D television without glasses. If this is perfected, the appeal will rocket.
At the moment, 3D is something that most people watch at their local cinema, or possibly even in the pub, but with production companies and manufacturers now really putting their efforts into such technology, it seems likely 3D will be with us for the foreseeable future.
