The Nokia E72, An E71 Improvement by:Simon Drew

Not too long ago, if you needed a business phone offering a decent messaging feature

, there was only one sensible choice - a Blackberry. Especially in the corporate jungle where email access from anywhere outside the office has become the work lifestyle, Blackberry provided the goods. Now you have a slew of brands competing for this specialized market. Nokia does itself proud to head with excellent messaging gadgets with its E-series mobile phones. Now the latest of which, the E72, does not disappoint.

What's the different?

Coming up on the heels of its most successful E71, the E72 proves Nokia doesn't rest on its laurels. Apart from the keypad, there's little else to distinguish between the two.

The enhancements are beyond skin-deep though, with a major boost on the camera, from 3.2 megapixels on the E71 to 5 megapixels on the new E72. The other two major improvements are the new S60v3 FP2 operating system that allows new features such as viewing all open applications from any where in the phone menu, and enabling more creative transitions of animated icons used in the menu. The other is the use of 3.5mm audio jack whereas the E71 used 2.5mm.

What other features are there?

Differences aside, the E72 leverages on much of what made the E71 a hit. So there's a GPS receiver, now with digital compass and map support. High-speed data connection like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, HSUPA and HSPDA are all there for quick file transfers while on the move. Its email and messaging features that made the E71 a business phone of choice remains a quiet but strong feature in the new E72. Internal memory is an impressive 250MB, with support for microSD up top 16Gb. Multimedia features for audio and video recording and playback remains with all the popular codecs supported. Thankfully enough, Nokia has maintained the battery specs for the new handset for great talk and standby times shared with the E71.

An overall assessment

The Nokia E72 gets thumbs up endorsement from a lot of pundits on the net, including users. It seems Nokia has been going the rounds asking customers what features they want on new phones over a previous model line up. Using the same designs and feature sets that have made the Nokia E71 popular among business phone users, with innovative features to update the device, the new E72 may not have a tough act to follow.
