The Nutcracker in 3D

The Nutcracker in 3D

Upcoming movie, "The Nutcracker in 3D," is set in Vienna in the 1920s. While you don't meet Freud in the movie, he's referred to occasionally. This is appropriate as the heroine of the movie, Mary, played by Elle Fanning, has definitely got something wrong with her. Not only can she bring toy soldiers to life in her imagination but also imagines society being run by rats that resemble Nazis in the Holocaust. This new movie is just awful. It's worse than awful. New movie release "The Nutcracker in 3D" is in fact so bad that you should go out of your way NOT to see it. It may, however, do okay at the box office.

Uncle Albert, overplayed by Nathan Lane, brings Mary and her brother Max, played by Aaron Michael Drozin, who enjoys breaking toys, the Nutcracker. When the lights go out, Mary is startled to find that the Nutcracker has come to life. She names it NC. NC is voiced by Shirley Henderson. Mary then meets the Sugar Plum Fairy, played by Yuliya Vyotskaya, who also plays Mary's mother. NC tells Mary that he's a prince who was overthrown by the King of the Rats, played by John Turturro, and that the rat has turned him into a nutcracker and is now forcing NCs city to become "ratified." The Rat King doesn't like light so he has smoke factories running all the time and the children of the city have to bring their toys there to be burned up in a Holocaust of toys.

Director Andrei Konchalovsky and co-writer Chris Solimine thought this was a good idea but no one knows why. It's a wonder as to how the script was green lighted, as it turns the Holocaust into a tasteless fairy tale. If that wasn't enough, both the characters and dialogue are horrific. The movie also offers up eight new BAD Tim Rice songs. The 3D effects are also terrible.

One good thing about this movie, that's sure to show up a lot in movie news, is the cast. This movie makes the very respectable cast, including Fanning, Lane, Turturro, Frances d la Tour and Richard E. Grant look a little less respectable. This is not a holiday movie to remember, at least not in any good way. A movie that cost $90 mil should be better than this.
