The Office in My Garden – What Opportunities My Investment Created

The Office in My Garden What Opportunities My Investment Created

I was tired and fed up and it was only Monday. My journey to work involved driving to the station then travelling by overland train on the Thameslink line then tube, via two changes at Farringdon and Liverpool Street Stations. Today it had been hot, uncomfortable and frightening with the lightless underground power cuts, and was clearly having a cumulative effect on my health and wellbeing. As a medical practitioner, I faced a tough-love dose of my own advice and a re-think concerning where I work.

Initially cautious about making a purely emotional decision, I took time out to consider the implications and viability of working closer to home. Clinic rental was high and largely inappropriately placed for any-time appointments, close to off licenses and take-aways. Practicing from home also has it's limitations until I hooked the concept of garden offices. The cost of any garden office room would have to cancel out my business rent and running costs and begin showing clear cost benefits within the first year.

After a chat with my accountant, it became apparent that I could finance the studio through my business as a self-employed acupuncturist. It would come under plant and machinery as a business asset. I had also the choice of making it my own, by paying for it myself outright. In that way, the value it added to my home as extra living space or a home office - would be realized when I came to sell the property. Logically, working from home would save money on the horrendous commute, saving a good deal on carbon emissions too and ease the stress the commute put me under.

I found confidence dealing with a bespoke design company. I needed three treatment rooms and a waiting/office area including a disabled toilet. My garden has a separate side gate access for visitors and a gently inclining path already laid to the office site. Running my practice from home has attracted more women and children. I can now effortlessly offer evening appointments twice a week for busy workaholics; morning appointments for pensioners and afternoon appointments for school staff and children. That allows several hours of mid-day time free for me to complete paperwork and generate more interest via website seo and local advertising campaigns. It also allowed me time to collect my children from school and make dinner.

My garden studio health practice has opened a range of opportunities. It has enhanced my lifestyle, allowing me time to be with family and still enjoy work. It has allowed me to schedule appointments more widely, as I no longer need to spend 2 hours commuting to reach the old practice. It has inadvertently attracted more young people to my services and more women. Perhaps a result of the perceived homely environment. It has released more cashflow as I no longer have a rent bill, enabling the business to advertise and grow.
