The Old Rubber Patch Never Gets Old
Take me back to the day when wearing rubber patches on everything were so cool. A rubber patch, as custom labels or clothing labels go, were a fun way to cover up damaged clothing with a cool emblem. In those days it was exciting to get a hole in your jeans while on the playground, because then you knew that your mother would have a thread and needle with her rubber patch ready to go. Those days were so thrilling because as you skipped home with a scraped knee and a hole in your jeans, a part of you knew that you would get in trouble for not being careful enough while playing, and the other part of you was anticipating which patch you would pick out this time, as last time you chose the train over the Mickey Mouse face, and now Mickey Mouse would finally get its chance to adorn your pants.
As a child I remember walking through Macy's and seeing a beautiful pocketbook made out of jean material and I wanted it so bad so I asked my mother for it. After a quick study of the pocketbook her keen observation lead her to the unsettling truth that I already had one just like it, so her answer was no. To me, my mother was a studious mom but I just couldn't understand why she didn't notice the big difference between this jean pocketbook and my own, so I had to clarify for her. I let her know, as I shook my head in disbelief, that the Macy's pocketbook obviously had rubber patches on that one, and mine didn't. Well, my mother laughed and said she could add any emblem, clothing label, or custom label that I wanted on my old pocketbook, instead of spending money just for the additional rubber patches; I went home defeated.
Once we arrived home my mother reminded me to give her my pocketbook to add the rubber patches that I so desired and I reluctantly gave it to her; I just couldn't see how she could make my plain pocketbook look as cool as the rubber patched pocketbook at Macy's. An hour or so later, a pocketbook was given back to me that could not have been the same pocketbook. Not only were there rubber patches that I saw on the other pocketbooks, but there were cooler ones with all of my favorite characters on them as well. I hugged my mother and thanked her, and then asked her to sew labels of rubber patches on my sneakers, and my backpack as well. I couldn't believe rubber patches weren't just for holey jeans.
Now as an adult with two little ones the textile business has been booming with organized groups like the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts ordering rubber patches by the dozen. Our USA manufacturers of custom patches are busy creating rubber patches along with their custom patches, clothing labels, emblems, and PVC labels. Rubber patches are an oldie but a goodie and will never go out of fashion. In today's world, mothers don't sew as much as they used to and iron-on patches have replaced a lot of the sew labels, but now we have more USA manufacturers of custom patches providing the old fashion rubber patches that we are accustomed to, and taking the place of our mother, by providing custom rubber patches for our fashion needs, whether for our uniforms, shoes, pocketbooks, bags or for our holey jeans.
