The One And Only Deadwood Golf Course

I had the luck of the Irish when I met my friend's golfing buddies that he played golf with on the weekends. We had booked a Saturday tee time for 11:30 a.m, two groups of three. We met at the pro shop which was a small wooden shack with a few dozen golf balls for sale and bags of tees, very plain but practical, it also doubled as the starter booth. This course might not be pretty, but it is tough enough to be a good challenge for most of us. We teed off and began the round without a hitch, the usual spraying of some drives left and right. We waited for the other players to take their shots and get back in play again. We all managed get on the green and putt out for six pars. The course is situated on a piece of old farmland with deep ravines, creeks, and deep rye grass. Wind is always a factor on the course because there are no trees, which makes this a good links style course. There is an old wooden bench at each tee box with names carved onto them from all the golfers passing through, or this could be a local tradition, who knows.

It is almost like a chunk of land from Scotland was transplanted here, large bunkers and long rye grass. The par four holes average lengths are about four hundred yards and more, with massive bunkers and creeks running parallel to the fairways. Par five holes are up to five hundred and ninety yards long, most very flat, narrow fairways with four inch rough and plenty of wheat grass in the rough. When I end up in that stuff always chop the ball out with a pitching wedge or nine iron. All the the guys seem to be having a decent round so far, a couple of birdies after a few holes keeps everyone happy and energized. On this course driving the ball far off the tee is a good advantage because of the length of the holes, two hundred and sixty yards off the tee is my average. I swing my three wood quite well, that is my go to club when I want to keep more control of my shots off the tee box and fairway. I have noticed that some of my playing partners are doing the same with their three woods, using them more than their drivers. The par threes are always the fun holes I find, you can play closest to the hole for bucks or just for bragging rights.

Number seven is one hundred and forty-five yards, a seven iron to the green, then a two putt if you land the ball below the hole. Most of the greens are tilted back to front, this is for drainage purposes, that is why you will always find the front of the green soft. I try to keep the ball below the hole, that way it's easier to putt uphill than it is downhill. There were three birdies and three bogies on that hole, the three approach shots that ended up below the hole were the birdies. We stopped for a quick lunch and out to number ten we headed. A great par four hole was parred by all of us. The last par five is a driving hole, where the longest drive gets a free beverage after the round from everyone, a nice reward for the longest drive at the end of the round. All of us teed off and took a walk down the fairway to see who is going to be the big winner. We let all drives count, even the ones that are were in the rough. After all of our drives were found and accounted for, I came up the big winner, at about three hundred yards. The fairways give you quite a bit of roll here, so I can't take all the credit. Except for the fact that I do not drink alcohol, I ended up with six beers which I traded for dinner. That worked out well because I was quite hungry anyway. We continued golfing together for a few more years, but I could not keep the group together. I'm sure they are golfing somewhere and having a great time. They always seem to find a way, that is what I like about them.
