The Origin Of Honeymoon

It is well known that the first month of newlyweds is called the honeymoon

. Do you know how did honeymoon come from? It is said that honeymoon originated from the old conventions in North Europe. The newlyweds should drink honey water or honey wine every day during the first month.

What's more, the newlyweds will have some trips to several places of interest and beautiful venues to indicate the beginning of happy life. For the reason that drink honey water every day make people feel uncomfortable, the convention of drinking honey water in the first month of newlyweds has been abandoned before long. Nevertheless, the tradition of taking a holiday to pretty places to relax and enjoy life has passed down.

There is a legend said that in the old days in Britain, marriage by capture was fairly popular and famous. The husband would take his wife to the countryside and lived for a couple of days for fear that his wife would be captured by others. You can see honeycomb anywhere in England at that time. Besides, the Britain has the convention of drinking honey wine since ancient times. As a result, the life of living with partner and drinking honey wine every day in the first month after marriage is named honeymoon.

There is another legend said that honeymoon originated from Ireland in the beginning of 6th century. The Celtic tribe lived there at that time. Alice, the daughter of the chief in the tribe was rather pretty and she liked eating sweety very much. The prince near the tribe often took a lot of honey to her and made a propose of marrying her. When the princes of other tribes got married, Alice would entertain those guests with wine made of honey. For the reason that Alice made too much wine for guests and there still remained much wine after wedding receptions, the newlyweds went on drinking the remained wine for another month. As a consequence, the local residents imitated Alice's way of making honey wine when their children got married and called the first month of marriage "honeymoon".
