The Origin Of The Modern Garage Was The Barn

When you think of what a garage is, you likely picture a car surrounded by old holiday decorations

, bikes, and abandoned toys. There are stacks of unlabeled boxes that leave a mystery as to what is inside. But it was not always this way, and this kind of approach was not always an option. In fact, looking back on the earlier concepts of a garage, some may even find themselves both confused at amused at how much time can change something.

In the old days, there was no such thing as a garage. Instead, it was called a barn. Barns were generally used by farming families to keep their livestock, horses and some of their supplies that did not need to stay in the house. In some instances, people would actually sleep in the same structure as the animals, choosing to use the upper level of the barn for their rest.

This was not exactly a bad move. As they say heat rises and the warmth from the animals on the lower level would make its ascent. This was early central heating that kept the sleeping family nice and cozy in the cold weather. When the owner of the barn did not necessarily want a weary traveler resting inside their house, they would be sent to the barn to sleep with the animals.

Fast forward to the creation of the horseless carriage, otherwise known as the vehicle or car. At first, cars were kept in the same area as the horses of the household, but this just wasn't satisfactory. For one thing, the cars ended up smelling like the horses. For the wealthy folks this simply would not do at all.

The solution was to build a large storage garage for various families to park their cars in, away from the aromatic animals. Think of this as similar to the modern day parking garage, but only on one level. The cars were kept there every day and taken out whenever the family went to church, or in to town to do some shopping. This is the opposite of how parking garages work today where vehicles are parked usually in a short term basis.

Today, almost every house has an attached garage especially designed to shelter one or two vehicles. However, many folks simply pass through it to get to their car without a second thought. Many times vehicles are not even kept in the garage because junk is taking up too much room. It might only be the onslaught of winter that causes the garage to suddenly be cleared out to make room for the family car.

These days the garage has become completely integrated with the particular home's design and its purpose has changed over the years. However, garages will always be needed when storage is a must. Whether it contains vehicles or not, these marvelous structures need to be taken care of. That is why it is important to protect the contents with an attractive and secure door from your local garage door supplier.
