In addition to revolutionising communications technology the smart phone also provided some interesting potential surrounding new interfaces for control, as it was one of the first effective products to implement the touchscreen.

The most recent type of computer that we have seen emerge recently is the tablet computer; this is a sort of hybrid between the laptop and the smart phone, bigger in size than a smart phone and with a touch screen. Though there is not yet a standardised size set for a tablet computer, the iPad line has a screen size of just less than ten inches, and most will be around this size. As a general rule is a computing device uses an on-screen interface and does not have any regular phone functions it is considered a tablet computer.

For many consumers the purpose of the tablet computer is one that is yet to make itself clear, as laptops are still more versatile machines and just as portable. However, there is still potential in the tablet computer, the touch screen interface certainly has a number of implications for creative control.
