The Origins Of Golf

Many of us love to go off and have a game of golf

. Not only is it a very enjoyable hobby, but it can also be a great way to unwind and forget about the pressures of everyday life (that is, if you do not spend hours trying to get your ball out of a bunker!). What other sport do we have that can be such an incredibly relaxing way of spending a few hours? Many people will regularly play football, rugby, cricket or tennis; although these are not quite on par (excuse the pun) with golf in terms of relaxation... But, when did this much loved game actually begin?

The game of 'golf' is thought to have originated in Scotland during the 12th century. When they were not busy looking after their sheep, shepherds would pass the time by knocking stones into rabbit holes! This (apparently) took place at the current site of The Old Course of Saint Andrew's. Although some players believe the sport to be much older than that... One theory even suggests that the game came about in Roman times when players used bent wooden sticks to hit a stuffed leather ball.

Whatever the history of the game, there are certainly thousands of people all around the world who enjoying playing golf today. As far as using a bent wooden stick goes, well, things have thankfully improved over the years. Modern players use some very precise equipment; mathematics and science both feature strongly in the design of equipment and plenty of skill is required to be successful in the game. Besides, not all golfers are right handed and nature does not specialise in its own range of left handed sticks... Luckily, in today's game this is not an issue at all as there are plenty of left handed golf clubs on sale.

Golf clothing has also gone through many changes over the years and today's players are far better equipped than those of years ago. Modern clothes are specifically designed to keep the player warm in the colder months, of which there always seem to be plenty! They are also designed to be 'game friendly' for the golfer. Modern garments are created in such a way as to be unrestrictive to movement.

Even the process of buying golfing equipment has improved since the advent of the internet. Most modern players purchase their clubs, clothes and accessories online because it is so much easier. There is a far better choice of items and they can often be found for a fraction of the price of offline suppliers.

All in all, golf may still essentially be the same game, but it has seen a massive amount of change over the years. The equipment is far more advanced than it was, we are much better protected against the elements and finding the items we want is easier to do than ever. Even though golf has been played for a very long time, golfers have never had it so good as they do today!
