The Origins of Casual Friday

Casual Friday is a popular event in both America and Canada

. It is also known as Dress-down Friday or casual day. This custom is basically the act of dressing down every Friday in the workplace. No heels, no ties, no pant suits, no collared shirts, no body kits. Some offices even have themed down day, such as Sports day or Christmas apparel. Typically, jeans, T-shirts, hoodies, and sneakers are allowed on casual Fridays. However, some offices are a bit more uptight and they require a business casual or what they call smart casual.

So where did this dressing down day come from? Well, the tradition began in the late 1950s and it was invented as a way to raise a workers morale in the new white-collar environment. At that point, it was still widely unpopular, but in the 1970s the production of cheap clothing in the United States caused the custom to spread. In fact, there were high budget campaigns by large clothing companies to make Casual Fridays a weekly event.

During the Dot Com era, or hey day of the late 1990s/early 2000s there was also a an increase in companies taking advantage of Casual Fridays, particularly in the San Francisco Bay area for some reason. At this time, some companies were so relaxed that shorts and sandals were okay to wear to work. However, after the fizzle of the Dot-Com phenomenon, many companies decided to reinstate proper dress codes. One of the biggest backlash was Target in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2004. After Labor Day weekend, they decided to require business formal dress and ban Casual Fridays for good.
