, and more-year old organisation known as the "Parent-Teacher Association" or PTA. This organization encourages relationships between educators, school personnel and parents. Nearly all neighborhood organizations are created under the State PTA, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia.
The Parent-teacher-assosiation was created by Alice McLellen Birney, together with fellow parent and former school teacher, Phoebe Apperson Hearst. It was initially named the "National Congress of Mothers", launched in Marietta, Georgia in February of 1897. Its goal was to improve both the education and social lives of kids, regardless of background, religion, ethnic culture or public ranking.
Initially composed of hundreds of state, county and city groups, the Parent-Teacher Association ended up unified with the "NCCPT" in the early 70s. The 73 year holdup was a result of individual state segregation regulations.
