Electronic cigarettes are both innovative technology and rather simple devices
, but many who both support and oppose their use still do not quite understand how they work and what they do. The tech behind e-cigs can seem intimidating at first, and even mysterious, but in fact these devices are quite simple.
The E-Cigarette Cartomizer
The portion of an electronic cigarette that stands in for the traditional cigarettes filter is called the cartomizer, and it serves multiple functions. Even though e-cigs require power to operate, the cartomizer is where the real "magic" happens.
An e-cigarette cartomizer contains an atomizer, which is the heating element that allows electronic cigarettes to produce their signature stand-in for smoke: vapor. Basically, when given power, the atomizer heats up liquid, causing it to evaporate and turn from a liquid to a gas or vapor form.
The liquid itself is of course an essential component of the e-cig cartomizer. Regardless of what some may say about the fact that "we do not know what is in electronic cigarette liquid", in fact we do know. It is comprised of propylene glycol, which is an ingredient in many medical vapors such as asthma inhalers. It also contains vegetable glycerin, an FDA-approved product you have probably consumed in food hundreds or even thousands of times in your life. Aside from those two ingredients, e-cig vapor may contain flavorings, generally made from food-grade materials.
The final piece of the electronic cigarette cartomizer is the filler, which is a fibrous, cloth-like material that acts as a sponge, absorbing the liquid and releasing it as vapor gradually in order to keep the vaping experience consistent.
Electronic Cigarette Batteries
The longer section of the electronic cigarette is the battery, but it contains more than simply the power source.
The battery itself is lithium, of the same type that is used in cameras and cell phones, but it may not be a battery at all. Some e-cig brands also offer pass-throughs, which allow vapers to power their e-cig by connecting the end to a wire, which then connect to the USB port on a computer.
In addition to the power source, most batteries also contain an LED at the end. While many think this is simply a method of imitating the traditional smoking experience, in fact the LED is not even always red like the end of a lit cigarette, and it serves a practical function. Manufacturers of e-cigarettes use LEDs to indicate when the battery needs to be charged, through flashing, dimming or other means.
So, you see, electronic cigarettes are both complicated and quite simple. The individual parts work in some surprising ways, but the result is that heat is provided by a power source and applied to liquid to cause that liquid to evaporate into a vapor. The fog machines seen at dance clubs and concerts function the same way, and even use propylene glycol, just like e-cig vapor does.
E-cigs are also a bit of a technological marvel. You really have to admire the minds that devised such an innovative way to simulate the traditional smoking experience without the fire hazard and foul odor. When you begin to understand how they work, it becomes clear that some minor genius went into the invention of electronic cigarettes.
