The Pediatric Dentist And Your Child

To have the best teeth possible your dental experience should start when you are young

. Many dentists recommend age 3 because all of the baby teeth are in the mouth by that time, but some pediatric dentists follow the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists which recommends that a child visit a dentist as early as 6 months of getting the first tooth.

When you are looking for a pediatric dentist you are looking for someone who works on children as early as birth to young adult. A pediatric dentist specializes in the early growth and the prevention of disease in the teeth and gums so that the child can have a healthy outlook from day one. Several also work with special needs children, such as Down syndrome and autism. Having a pediatric dentist will help your child develop trust to make it easier for them to see their dentist and have dental work done as they grow up.

If you desire to become a pediatric dentist you will be required to take a couple of extra years of dental training after achieving your doctorate degree in dentistry. Once this training is complete, you will be eligible to become board certified by the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and you can begin to practice. You are also required to have a specialty permit to be labeled a pediatric dentist in most states.

Once you have earned your dental license you will specialize in teaching children how to avoid tooth decay because it has been shown in several studies that children who have bad oral health don't do as well in school or have good relationships with others. You will also advise parents how to help their children develop good eating habits to help develop strong teeth and prevent gum disease.

Not only do you help children prevent tooth decay, but also you will help them keep their baby teeth in good condition until they lose them on their own. The baby teeth are important because they help children chew their food properly to maintain good health as well as have good speech and make sure that their teeth spaced properly so that the new teeth come in straight.

As the child grows, your role changes to help the child have a good self-image. This includes informing them about the negative use of tobacco, the importance of sealants, the growth of wisdom teeth, and the damaging affects of tongue and lip piercings.

Your main job as a pediatric dentist is to help educate children and their parents on how to maintain a healthy mouth between dental visits. The earlier you start the regular examinations, the earlier you can change bad habits and detect any early tooth decay so that the child can have good teeth for the rest of his life.
