The people found in Kenya are categorized into forty different tribes. These tribes belong either to the Bantu, Nilotic or Cushitic speakers. The most dominant group is the Bantu and the largest tribe is the Kikuyu. The Bantu speakers originated from western Africa, the cushites from Somalia and Ethiopia while the Nilotes came from Sudan. The Bantus are mainly agriculturalists, and the cushites are pastoralists. They normally live in the arid and semi arid parts of the country.

The Kikuyu who are more than 21% of the entire country's population dwell on the fertile slopes of Mt. Kenya. They are farmers as a result. The other major tribes are the Luo, Kisii, Kalenjin, Swahili and Kamba. The elmollo is the smallest tribe and it is facing extinction. The highest concentration of the people of Kenya is in the urban centers and cities. The capital city, Nairobi has the highest number of occupants. Here, people of different cultural beliefs and tongues live together and work in harmony. In rural areas, the people live together according to tribal affiliation. Tribalism is prevalent.

The most famous tribe is the Masai due to its well kept culture. They are a great source of tourism revenue. Traditionally, the people of Kenya were farmers, pastoralists or traders. Agriculture up to date is the backbone of the country's economy. Due to westernization other means of livelihood have come up. Most people are shying away from the traditional ways of life such as farming and herding. They are running to the cities to get white collar jobs.
