The People Who Work In Health And Safety Jobs

Safety is an important aspect of any job. Though health and safety inspections are a relatively new part of the workplace experience, they are very essential. Before laws regulating job safety were enacted, employers often put their employees in harm's way in order to increase production and profit. Health and safety jobs belong to the inspectors who are now responsible for making sure that no one is put in more than reasonable danger.

Technicians are the most common people in the health and safety field. Some technicians work for the government, and in the United States, those people mostly work for OSHA (the Occupational Health and Safety Administration). Most technicians work for private companies, however. Besides making sure that people follow safety policies, they are also responsible for making sure that machines work safely.

In order to make sure that employees follow them, technicians must have a good grasp of the relevant health and safety laws. Besides keeping employees within the limits of the laws, inspecting equipment to make sure that it is functioning safely and legally is also necessary. To determine if the environment is safe, officers must be responsible for taking and testing samples to see if dust, noise, toxins and other pollutants are within safe and legal limits.

To become a technician, people enroll in a program of study through a college or university, or they apprentice on the job. Some already work in a company, and gradually begin to take on safety responsibilities, learning as they go. Others work with or for a retiring technician, apprenticing in preparation for taking over. Associate's degrees or certificate programs in the field may or may not be combined with on the job training.

To increase their job potential, technicians can become certified. Some companies require that their technicians be certified, which makes sure that they have the appropriate education and skills to perform the job. A certification usually requires a certain amount of education and/or experience, and must be renewed after a given length of time.

To advance from a technician to a specialist, health and safety professionals will require a bachelor's or more advanced degree. Technicians can advance into positions above entry level, however, by taking continuing education courses, or learning on their own about the advances and changes in the field. This will increase their competitiveness when applying for more advanced jobs.

The main market for health and safety jobs is in replacing people who are retiring or transferring out of the field. There is less need for these professionals, these days, as automation increases in the manufacturing industry and telecommuting becomes more and more common. But health and safety jobs can sometimes be hazardous or tedious, so there is a certain amount of turnover. Getting a wide-spread education in the field will make the potential technician or specialist as competitive as possible.
