The Philadelphia 76ers will not be First Round Chum
The 76ers have earned the right to be the team no one wants to face in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Last's night win against Conference leading Chicago Bulls only reinforced the premise. The last time the 76ers' played the Bulls in Chicago they got crushed by the Bulls by 45. This time the 76ers came out strong early and got up by 23, then held off the late charges by Bulls who whittled the lead to four in the fourth quarter to win going away. Even though soon to be MVP Derrick Rose got 31 points, the 76ers defense for him to 10 turnovers, which often lead to transition easy buckets. The 76ers were lead by guard Andre Iguodala who had 19 points and reserve forward Thaddeus Young scored 21 points off the bench with a variety of slashes and jump shots. Center Spencer Hawes hit three clutch jumpers late and helped them outrebound the Bulls which is as rare as a warm winters day in the windy city. What was even more impressive about the win was that the 76ers played and lost a tough over time loss the day before.
The 76ers have been scrappers the entire year. They are young, a little undersized but they are hungry. Coach Doug Collins has the 76ers playing like a bunch of guys on ten day contracts. They play like a bunch of guys who eat at McDonalds and stay at Motel 6 on road games. They embody the city of Philadelphia. They are tough.
One of the main reasons the 76ers record is slightly above 500 is they have a strong tendency to play up or down to the competition. Against the elite teams I can't wonder how come they can't shake the 76ers. Against the sub 500 teams I wonder why the 76ers are not blowing the doors off on these guys. One of the main reasons are the 76ers are very young. They are one of the youngest teams in the league. Elton Brand being over 30 is the oldest starter and their young point guard Jrue Holiday can't legally order beer yet.
The thing that makes the 76ers dangerous is besides being young, is that they are improving. Over the last half of the season they have a winning percentage of over 600. They have literally arrived out of now where to the 6th spot. They are gaining confidence and will have nothing to lose in the playoffs. And outside of Elton Brand and Andre Iguodala no one has even heard of the rest of the cast.
I'm not saying the 76ers are title contenders just yet. They need a couple of more pieces and some more experience. I'm just saying the Boston Celtics, Miami Heat or the Chicago Bulls better not take the 76ers lightly or else they will be sent home early to eat chocolate and drink red wine.
