The Phones Could Cause Brain Cancer

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on

Cancer (IARC) connected today the use of cell phones with a "possible" risk of brain cancer in humans.

Both organizations announced in Lyon (southeastern France) that the electromagnetic fields generated by radio frequency devices such as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" and qualify therefore in category "2B." WHO and IARC based its decision on evidence that classification obtained on the impact of these electromagnetic fields at the origin of gliomas, a malignant type of brain cancer.

Although not quantified the risk, the WHO-working group of IARC referred to a study, with data up to 2004, detected a 40 percent increase in the risk of gliomas among the most frequent users of mobile phone systems , ie that the medium employed thirty minutes a day over a period of ten years.

However, he added that the evidence of the risk of glioma and acoustic neuroma are "limited" for mobile users, which means there is a "positive association" between exposure to credible and cancer agent, but that can not be exclude other factors in its development.

The head of the working group set up by WHO and IARC, Jonathan Samet of the University of Southern California, said that evidence gathered so far "are strong enough (...) for the classification of the type '2 B '."

This category is one that IARC uses to identify environmental factors that may increase cancer risk in humans and among them there are chemicals, occupational exposures and physical and biological agents, among others.

Since 1971, the IARC has analyzed more than 900 agents, of which about 400 have been identified as carcinogenic or potentially carcinogenic to humans.

The group "2B" includes agents for which there is a "limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans" and "2A" those who are "probably carcinogenic" to humans.

In the first group, the "1", IARC includes agents for which there is "sufficient evidence" that they are carcinogenic to humans.

The conclusion of the working group presented their findings today in Lyon is that "there may be some risk and, therefore, have to watch closely the link between cell phones and cancer risk," said Samet.

Christopher Wild, IARC director, added that "given the potential consequences of these results and the classification of public health, it is important to investigate long-term more intensive use of mobile phone equipment."

"Without such information, it is important to take practical measures to reduce exposure to hands-free devices like or text messaging," said Wild.
