Stairs literally come in all shapes and sizes. Some are better than others in the sense that they provide certain advantages and disadvantages. One of the more popular types of stairs is the helical or spiral staircase.

Spiral stairs have been in use for as far back as the early eighteenth century, when castles had tall towers and knights needed a way to get up and down the tower. The spiral staircase actually provided a strategic advantage to the defenders of the castle as attacking infantry would always be at a lower and more disadvantageous position compared to them. Of course, in modern times the typical outdoor spiral stairs have lost their military application, and instead have served a more functional and aesthetic purpose.

Outdoor spiral stairs are popular among homeowners who have pool decks, terraces or other upper level facility that requires access from the outside. These upper level facilities are favored for their ability to provide a birds eye view of the pool or the backyard. It is important for home owners to have access to these upper floors without having to go all the way inside the house and up the indoor stairs.

Most of the time, outdoor spiral stairs are constructed from iron or other metals. This is because outdoor facilities are exposed to the weather, and should be capable of withstanding the elements. Since iron and metal rusts after some time, applying rust-proofing solutions to outdoor metallic structures have become a necessity. Otherwise, the structure will succumb to rust eventually and lose its structural integrity.
