The Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront Helps Portland go Green

In todays society, it seems like everyone is talking about greener living

. From businesses to schools, the label of being green is something worthwhile. All of us strive to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle. We seem to be selective in our shopping and look for the green label whenever we make purchases. Hotels are even jumping on the eco-friendly bandwagon. Hotels are receiving the Energy Star Label when they take steps to help protect our environment.

If you are parent of a college student, your child has probably given you a lecture about becoming eco-friendly. Why not make them proud by staying at an eco-friendly Portland State University hotel during one of your visits? The Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront is one of several hotels near Portland State University. This Portland State hotel has been given both the Energy Star Label as well as receiving a Green Seal Certification for its efforts to help Portland in going green.

After receiving the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award in 2005 and 2006, Marriott Internationals company-wide continuous improvement in energy management helped the organization win the prestigious ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence designation in 2007. In 2006 alone, Marriott was able to save almost $6 million

and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 70,000 tons. The program included the installation of 450,000 compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), conversion of all outdoor signage to LED and fiber optic lighting, and implementation of energy as well as

water-efficient laundry systems. By 2010, the Marriott corporation hopes to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 6 percent in every hotel room.
