The Power of Relationship in Network Marketing
The world we live in is designed to function best when the environment is relational. The Creator, God created man that they might fellowship together. Creator, God loved the world so much that He sent His own Son to give His life that we, who are eternal spiritual beings, might spend our eternity with Him! If we examine our lives, we will perceive that the best environments grow out of the finest relationships.
I recall my childhood; my youngest brother was 12 years my elder. So my three brothers and my sister were all grown and married while I was still at home. Week-ends were special because my brothers and their wives all came home to visit Mom and Dad and we spent quality time together! These were memorable times. I will never forget! I also remember the times when some bigger kid would pick on me and we would get into a scrap and my youngest brother would step in and suddenly the whole environment changed!
I went to our camp this last week-end for the July 4 holiday and my son and his family came to spend the week-end with us. What a blessing that was. My youngest brother's family was having a picnic so my wife and I drove about 300 miles (round trip) to fellowship with them and visit my youngest brother who will be 90 in December What a blessing it was to be together again and to spend time together and with his kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. Nothing quite like family!
My memory frequently reviews the 5 year period in the later half of the 1960s with the research team that joined me to develope a superior instructional strategy under a federal grant. It was neat to be able to share it with educators from all over the country and some foreign countries who came to visit us. Sometimes we had over 200 visitors per month at the school where we created the system. Some of those visitors became friends that interacted for many years. The guys on my research team periodically get together just to dialogue about the times we had together. Four of us formed a company, "Innovative Instructional Strategists", and traveled the country together providing workshops for teachers in many school districts where we shared what we had learned together. Those relationships were what destined us to succeed and they have continued since the 1960s!
I am still visited by members of the school district in which I served 6 years as Asst. Superintendent for Instruction. What a pleasure to dialog about what we were able to accomplish and the wonderful years that we were able to share our findings with other districts and I am reminded of the many good friends that still remain just from that sharing experience.
My wife, Debbie and I still share vacations with friends we made at the small Bible College at which I served as President. Although we live in several states we make every effort to get together just to enjoy the relationship we developed back there many years ago.
I have had the extreme privilege of having 26 years as president of Elexio and enjoying the tremendous friendships that have evolved in the family of 25 employees. I think about on the comments from these guys and gals as they refer to themselves as the Elexio family. It is the relationships that enabled this fledgling company to make it through those start-up years. Four of us worked for the first year together without pay just to make it work - a relationship based upon a vision and the commitment to bring that vision to fruition.
Ok Gene, you say, what's with all this nostalgia? Well, I guess, I may be responding to an email I read recently from someone I do not know but who was making fun of the concept of relational marketing. I'm sure he has just not been blessed enough to have repeated success growing out of very special relationships. Lest you still have misgivings let me point to a few network marketing giants in the industry. My friend, Mike Dillard, one of the very top producers, for a long time is probably best known for Magnetic Marketing. Does that sound like relationship? Well get his famous book, "Magnetic Sponsoring", and see if you think it isn't about relationship building. How about the company, "Mentoring for Free", led by Michael Dlouhy? Read their material and see if you think they are about relationships! Now let me tell you about a relative newbe to the industry, David Wood, who, in an amazingly short period of time has become one of the most successful in the industry. If you know David as I do, you will recognize that he goes out of his way to help anyone that desires his help. He even has a phone calendar on which you can select a time to speak with him. No matter how busy he will get back to you. He is constantly providing free content that is aimed directly at making you a success.
Let me tell you something that I know about this environment. When you give help without expecting anything, but just to assure their success, what effect do you think that has on your teams retention rate? Well let me tell you. Retention rate for those of us who function in this environment is significantly different from the average. With the average retention rate you must work vehemently to maintain the team at a constant number. But when your team trusts you and depends upon you for continual training, when they constantly have shared with them the techniques that you have learned they have no desire to go elsewhere. Relationship and turst absolutely births loyalty.
If you are just starting to look at Network Marketing as your new business or if you are unemployed and looking for a new opportunity then seek out a leader who believes in relationship or Attraction Marketing. Your start-up will be significantly faster with this kind of leadership! Also seek out one that will help you understand the resources needed to get started so that you can plan and budget without surprises that force you to stop. Most of us can plan and pick up the funds that are needed to start a network marketing business if they know what to expect and have very few surprises in getting started and before they are profitable. This is a key point to be concerned about in choosing a mentor. You should expect a leader who builds their squad on relationship to be giving help to those that they determine are resolute and dedicated. You may count on them to help anyone, but to invite to be members of their team only those who demonstrate these characteristics. Remember, this type of leader will lay out a great amount of time and effort into making you successful. They will be hesitant to accept somebody on their team that will not have the initiative to stick it out and to help others as they learn!
