The Premier Diamond Engagement Rings

Need some advice on what type of shape and cut you require for your diamond engagement ring?

Well apart from your own personal taste there are some more technical details you should know about.

The round, most traditional of all cut diamonds is the brilliant cut diamond. This cut has the most amount of facets being 57 in all and when compared to any other sort of cut will best refract light and give you this fantastic sparkle for which all diamonds are famous for.

All the other type of cuts are generally called fancy cuts' and can be divided into several groups depending on the amount of facets on them and of course their shapes.

The first group all have 57 facets, just like the brilliant cut, but because they are differently angled to those found on the brilliant cut, they will refract light slightly differently, around 85% of what the brilliant cut is able to refract. These are the marquise, pear, heart and oval cuts.

The next group is that of the square type of shape. These are the princess, asscher, cushion, radiant and square. These refract around 55% of light when compared to the brilliant cut the princess is best of all with around 70% though and a bit of an exception on its own.

The next group refracts the least light of all cut diamonds, these are the emerald, baguette and trilliant cuts. These will refract around 35% when compared to the brilliant cut.

Now because some diamonds refract light differently than others it doesn't mean that they should not be considered as a main stone in a diamond ring as their shape will allow for a different and more personal look to your ring and their relative lack of sparkle will be compensated by their originality in design and will look very good on anyone's finger.

This last group, on a per carat basis, is also much cheaper than the traditional brilliant cut, not because there is less of a demand but simply because the diamond loses less of its weight during the cutting process. So at equal value you will get a bigger looking diamond for your money.

These differences in price will vary from around 20% to 35% so this too will influence you in the choice of cut and shape you wish to adopt.
